Optogenetics > Ce:YAG Light Sources
Fluorescence illumination
We designed a fluorescent light source, called the Ce:YAG Fiber Light Source, in which a Ce:YAG crystal is pumped with multiple high-power blue laser diodes instead of blue LEDs. This concentrates excitation and fluorescence emission in a very small area of the Ce:YAG crystal. As shown in the figure below, this patent pending laser diode pumping geometry significantly increases the fiber coupling efficiency compared to conventional light sources such as incandescent lamps or LED based light sources.
- The Ce:YAG Fiber Light Source emits incoherent light in the green-yellow-red part of the spectrum (see the figure below) with brightness levels far exceeding those of LED based light sources.
- Unlike lasers, the output of the Ce:YAG Fiber Light Source is speckle-free due to the incoherent nature of flu- orescence.
- The Ce:YAG Fiber Light Source can be electronically modulated through its pumping laser diodes without noisy spiking encountered with diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) lasers emitting in the green-yellow range of the visible spectrum.
